Interview: Junel Solis, Head of Image Data Analysis in Turku BioImaging, Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node

Junel Solis, Head Image Data Analyst at the Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node of Euro-BioImaging in Turku, gave an interview to Euro-BioImaging Scientific Ambassador Pablo Suarez-Cortes (Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, Berlin) about how he supports researchers by managing and analysing complex image datasets across diverse scientific fields.

Junel shared how his work spans traditional biological microscopy and unconventional projects — from cancer research to marine biology and agriculture — turning complex imaging data into scientific discoveries. Key challenges include interpreting unfamiliar datasets accurately with researcher input and handling increasingly massive, multi-dimensional image files efficiently.

Junel, who trained as a medical doctor before moving into biomedical and biological imaging, values the constant problem-solving and interdisciplinary collaboration his role offers. If you want to know more, read the full interview here and get inspired.

Euro-BioImaging ERIC is a research infrastructure that offers open access to biological and biomedical imaging technologies, training and data services across 41 Nodes in 18 countries and the EMBL. Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node of Euro-BioImaging is a multimodal and multi-sited research infrastructure that provides open-access imaging and microscopy services in Helsinki, Turku, Oulu, Kuopio* & Tampere* (*not yet ratified Euro-BioImaging ERIC service provider). The Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node is part of the Euro-BioImaging Finland, a national roadmap infrastructure and a national lighthouse. The FiAM is funded by the Research Council of Finland, FIRI 2023 and FIRI 2024.
