Results from the Catalyst funding and Image competition

Earlier this year we had an open call for mini projects and an imaging competition. We were thrilled to receive over 20 applications, each with exciting science, ideas and plans, and more than 10 fantastic images.

After a careful review, the top project proposals (in alphabetical order) were:

Aaron Barron, Turku Brain and Mind Center

Francisco Miguel Acosta Manzano, Turku PET Centre

Ilkka Paatero, Turku Bioscience Centre

And the winner of the image competition was:

The Rotifer, by Ilkka Paatero

The image is featured in this article. Image of a rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was taken by Ilkka Paatero by using glutaraldehyde-enhanced autofluorescence method. After fixation and chemical processing, the sample was mounted into low-melting point agarose (0.7%) on glass-bottomed dishes for imaging with 3i CSU-W1 spinning disk, 40× Zeiss LD C-Apochromat WI objective and excitation at 561 nm. The obtained image was pseudocolored for depth using FIJI software.

Image has been published as a cover image in Biology Open (2024, Vol 13, Issue 11) under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license and original grey-scale image published in article Miika Niemeläinen, Anna-Mari Haapanen-Saaristo, Leena M. Koskinen, Josef Gullmets, Emilia Peuhu, Annika Meinander, Sara Calhim, Ilkka Paatero; Glutaraldehyde-enhanced autofluorescence as a general tool for 3D morphological imaging. Biol Open 15 November 2024; 13 (11): bio060428. doi: https://doi.org/10.1242/bio.060428

The image has been also highlighted as a biomedical image of the day (https://bpod.org.uk/archive/2024/12/10).

IMPORTANT NOTE – Unfortunately, we had to discard two highly ranked applications because the applicants were not Field of View (FoV) members. In the future, please make sure you are a member before participating in FoV activities like this. – It’s free to register, and the process is quick and easy, and both individual members and research groups are accepted.

On behalf of the Field of View research program – congratulations, and thank you for your enthusiasm and creativity. We hope to see your ideas in future opportunities, so keep your eye on our newsletter and emails!
